Green water consumption on rainfed and irrigated cropland (mm yr–1 per cropland area, 1971–2000 average).

Map description and dataset provided by: Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research

DescriptionGreen Water Consumption on Cropland

Green water is involved in agricultural water consumption around the world, including irrigated areas. The geographical differences in the absolute values reflect primarily the differences in the climatic conditions, with green water consumption being lowest in dry (or cool) regions (e.g. in southern Africa and central Asia) and highest particularly in the tropics but also in the northern temperate zone (Europe, eastern U.S.).

High rates of green water consumption occur in regions (such as the tropics) with high evaporative demand and/or high soil moisture (required to meet this demand). Green water consumption is lowest in regions where precipitation is low. Low green water consumption in areas with high agricultural density (for example in India) reflect the fact that irrigation with blue water is dominant there. Note that the values refer to cropland areas rather than to entire 0.5° grid cells, i.e. the influence of the fractional coverage of a grid cell with cropland is eliminated.

The dataset has been produced within the project “Consistent assessment of global green, blue and virtual water fluxes in the context of food production: Regional stresses and worldwide teleconnections”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This project is endorsed as a partner project of the GWSP.
