Interactive Map

Annual nitrogen flux at river mouth shown by basin (kgN/km2/yr per basin).

Map description and dataset provided by: Water Systems Analysis Group, Complex System Research Center, Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space, University of New Hampshire, USA

DescriptionNitrogen Flux (Total)

This map shows nitrogen fluxes developed from a nitrogen transport model utilizing a global database of drainage basin characteristics and a comprehensive compendium of river chemistry observations. Fluxes are estimated for total nitrogen, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, and total organic nitrogen. The largest nitrogen fluxes are predominantly seen river basins in the industrialized counties and basins with very high populations and/or extensive agricultural activities.

Interpretation

Model results show that total nitrogen fluxes from river basins have doubled from pre-industrial to the contemporary period, with many industrialized areas of the globe showing an increase up to 5-fold (Green et al., 2004). DIN fluxes from river basins have increased 6-fold from the pre industrial to the contemporary period. The amount of nitrogen loading delivered to river mouth as flux is greatly influenced by both basin temperatures and hydraulic residence times suggesting a regional sensitivity to loading.

Background

This dataset was developed in support of analysis outlined in Green et al., 2004 and was initially spearheaded as a part of the International SCOPE Nitrogen Project, which received support from both the Mellon Foundation and from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) in Santa Barbara, California.
